Being a stay-at-home mum in Scotland is a whirlwind, full of tiny odd socks, big dreams, and never enough Diet Coke. This Scottish mum lifestyle blog is my honest take on the chaos, colour and small joys of mum life in the Northeast of Scotland.

I’m not here to pretend I’ve got it all together, who does, really? When your days are filled with building dens, removing playdough from ears, and making sure everyone has a full tummy, perfection isn’t the goal. But I have found a few small joys that make the days feel brighter, more manageable, and just a wee bit more me.

So, here are 10 little things that help me feel like myself again in the middle of motherhood chaos.

1. My Planner – A must for This Scottish Mum Life

Let’s talk about lists. I never feel like I have life under control unless I’m following one, whether it’s scribbled on the back of an envelope or inside my best notebook. But when I’m living my best organised life, I’m using a proper planner. It has space for meal plans, to-do lists, shopping, schedules, all in one place.

2. My Kindle for Tiny Pockets of Peace

Reading has always been my happy place. But when I became a mum, books were replaced with wipes, snacks, and comforters. I missed it. Enter: my Kindle. It slips into my bag, goes everywhere with me, and lets me read even if it’s just five minutes at soft play. And yes, it’s probably a Frieda McFadden thriller.

3. My Spotify Life-Savers

You’ll never part me from my Spotify subscription. I have playlists for everything, dog walks, cleaning, car karaoke, and even my little one’s birth playlist. Fun fact: “Spirit in the Sky” was the first song my little boy heard when he was born. No idea how that happened… but here we are! Music and podcasts help me feel more me, even when I’m just doing the dishes.

4. My Favourite Mug (and the Not-Coffee Life)

I’ve tried to love coffee. I really have. But my hot drink of choice is either a Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate (the Velvetiser is life-changing), Diet Coke, or good old diluting juice, in my “mum mug,” of course. Because sometimes pretending you have your life together starts with a cute cup.

5. Quick Outdoor Resets

One of the best bits of advice I got in early motherhood? Get outside. Whether it’s a bear hunt in the woods or just puddle jumping up the street, it always helps. I keep wellies, puddle suits, and sunscreen by the door (because, Scotland), and we head out when everything feels too much.

6. My Dopamine Nails

This is my non-negotiable “me time.” I squeeze in a fresh set of BIAB every few weeks, even if I’m scrambling to book last minute. Bright colours, bold patterns, and an hour where I’m not “mum”, it’s a dopamine hit I truly need.

7. Road Trip Essentials – A Must-Have for This Scottish Mum Life

With family all over Scotland, we spend a lot of time in the car. I’m the snack-passer, audiobook selector, and co-pilot. Roald Dahl audiobooks are our current fave. I recently added a backseat organiser filled with snacks and toys, a total game-changer for keeping my little one entertained.

8. Starting My Veg Patch

With my little one at nursery some afternoons, I finally have a bit of time for me projects, like our new kitchen garden! After years of weeds, we cleared out our veg patch and planted seeds. This year is all about cooking more from scratch, reducing waste, and learning as we grow (literally).

9. Sunday Night List Rituals

Sunday nights = planning time. It’s a cosy little ritual: jammies on, cold drink in hand, Netflix in the background, and a big brain-dump list. I organise our week, update the family calendar (we love the TimeTree app!), and scribble it all out in pen and paper form.

10. My Daily Reminder

“Done is better than perfect.”
Whether it’s a blog post, a packed lunch, or a pile of unmatched socks, I remind myself of this daily.

💛 Final Thoughts

None of these things are particularly fancy. But they help me feel like me again. One of my favourite things about writing this Scottish mum lifestyle blog is capturing all the little joys that help me feel like more than just a snack-fetcher or toy-tidier.
